Together with architect John Dangerfield, Simon Pearce was responsible for the redevelopment and extension of the Grade I Listed Old Ashmolean building to provide new galleries, curatorial and archival facilities and improved access to one of the world's finest collections of historic scientific instruments and the 17th Century alchemical laboratory. The work included the preparation of a successful grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and extensive negotiations to secure Detailed Planning and Listed Building Consent.

The construction works involved major excavations between the existing building and the medieval city wall yielding a wealth of archaeology which became the subject of a critically acclaimed special exhibition.
