We were employed by a consortium, including The Ministry of Defence, English Heritage, English Nature and Essex County Council, to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills. We were responsible for leading a team of architects, engineers, interpretive and graphic designers, solicitors and accountants in the delivery of this major project comprising 21 listed buildings, an SSSI and two scheduled ancient monuments. The North site which had been an MOD research centre was closed in 1991, bringing to an end 300 years of explosives production and research.

We prepared a successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund which secured an award of £6.4m and also negotiated a grant of £5m from the Ministry of Defence. This enabled the majority of the original North site to be sympathetically decontaminated and a heritage visitor centre to be constructed, allowing public access and interpretation of the science, nature and history of the site.
