We were appointed by The National Trust to produce an Options Appraisal, Conservation Management Plan, Interpretive Plan and Business Plan for the redevelopment of the Ickworth Estate in Suffolk. This 2,000 acre estate, which passed to the National Trust in 1956, was loss-making. By introducing a luxury hotel into the East Wing, we produced a profit-making solution that is sustaining the estate both financially and environmentally. The solution had to comply with the site’s protected status (Grade 1), the large number of archaeological and ecologically important elements it contains, and the fact that any large scale, overtly-commercial development was ruled out as a matter of principle by the Trust.
