We were appointed in 2008 by the Isle of Wight Council to carry out a detailed feasibility study for a new tropical enclosure and rain screen canopy at Ventnor Botanic Garden, collectively known as the Glass House Project. The operational and financial objectives of the project required that the new glass house would be delivered with minimal environmental impact and that its operation would be carbon neutral. The project provided the initiative for the successful operation of the Garden as a whole to be 100% sustainable on the Isle of Wight.

The opportunity existed, therefore, for the study to enable the development of an exemplar of sustainable development, perhaps at an international level. The project also includes the incorporation of training facilities and programmes for volunteers and horticulture students.
